Queen Elizabeth II

After – Olivia Colman

Oscar and Emmy winner Olivia Colman (The Night Manager, Broadchurch) is wearing the crown of Queen Elizabeth II, taking over the role that Claire Foy has played so beautifully for the first two seasons. Philip, Duke of Edinburgh

Before – Matt Smith

After – Tobias Menzies

Matt Smith isn’t a stranger to a character’s regeneration from his time on Doctor Who, and on The Crown, Tobias Menzies (Outlander, Game of Thrones) will be stepping into the role of Prince Philip. Also, this isn’t the first time he’s worked with Olivia Colman. They both appeared together in The Night Manager.

Princess Margaret

Before – Vanessa Kirby

After – Helena Bonham Carter

Following a perfectly sublime performance, Vanessa Kirby passes the torch to Helena Bonham Carter (Harry Potter, Fight Club) in a season that will see Princess Margaret’s marriage come to an end, an infamous trip to the White House, and the beginnings of her affair with landscape gardener Roddy Llewellyn.

Antony Armstrong-Jones, Lord Snowdon

Before – Matthew Goode

After – Ben Daniels

Matthew Goode has moved on to the lead role in A Discovery of Witches, and Ben Daniels’ incarnation of Lord Snowdon will cover the dissolution of his marriage to Princess Margaret. If Daniels looks familiar, he previously starred on House of Cards and Law & Order: UK.

Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother

Before – Victoria Hamilton

After – Marion Bailey

Film, TV, and stage veteran Marion Bailey is playing the Queen Mum in Season 3, the role previously held by Victoria Hamilton.

Lord Louis Mountbatten

Charles Dance, best known as Tywin Lannister on Game of Thrones, inherits the role of Lord Mountbatten from Greg Wise. Mountbatten is Prince Philip’s uncle who was close with both the Duke of Edinburgh and the Prince of Wales.

Prince Charles

After – Josh O’Connor

Prince Charles has grown up, and Josh O’Connor (The Durrells in Corfu) will be playing him as he’s crowned Prince of Wales. We’ll also see the start of his relationship with Camilla Shand (Emerald Fennell). You might know her as Camilla Parker Bowles, and as of April 2005, the Duchess of Cornwall when she married Prince Charles.

Princess Anne

Before – Lyla Barrett-Rye

After – Erin Doherty

Erin Doherty (Call the Midwife) plays Princess Anne in Season 3. She grapples both with the family and role she was born into.
